Now I Know Why Sequels Suck...

It's been about a half a year since I've updated this site, and probably with good reason. I've got little to write about, unfortunately.

Around working and going to school and an attempt to have some semblance of a social life, I have been spending as much time as possible working on Book 2 from my Calypso series, and it's been exhausting work. Enjoyable work, but exhausting. Despite the joy I have for immersing myself into my book universe and the writing process, my lack of time means I rarely get to do it for long. I've been writing little things here and there to keep myself sharp (a la Hugh Howey's advice, naturally), but it's mostly short stories that are just based in my universe, and not necessarily applicable to my book.

Sequel writing is hard... having to continue where I left off in a fluid manner that also allows me to freely expand my science fiction universe. Having to remember every little detail I've already included, which for me means researching my first book because my own memory sucks that bad.

I recently had a discussion with a friend about world-building with space operas and science fiction. We were playing the Firefly board game (see older posts, beautiful game) and decided to play the TV show in the background, for the sake of flavor. As you may know, Calyspo is influenced partly by Firefly. It got me thinking about my book and the world I am trying to build, and whether or not I'm building it 'correctly'.

I have to consider the science of my universe - I have been all along, but sometimes I need to reconsider aspects that have previously been put on a back-burner or simply taken for granted. The fact that my universe is less futuristic and more alternate-universe, for example. Does FTL travel exist, then?

I have no clue.
